according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.
1 Kings 17:16
Have you ever, upon another’s advice, taken your last handful of flour and small amount of oil and used it to bake bread for yourself and your guest? The widow in our story did so, for she was asked to share her last food resources with the prophet Elijah (1 Kings 17:8-16).
Many in the world today understand the fear of starvation, for they are often without physical food on a daily basis, whether crowded under bridges, in lands of drought, or in refugee camps
There are, however, many in the world who suffer from another form of starvation. They have no hope for they live in fear of punishment and eternal death due to sins committed and good deeds undone. Trapped in false religions, they believe they can attain heaven on their own. They rely on spiritual food that doesn’t satisfy, spiritual food that brings about only self-reliance or despair.
The Gospel is the good news that even though sinners can’t save themselves, Christ Jesus has saved us by His life, death, and resurrection. We, as Christians, have the spiritual food they need, for the Gospel is the only religion that feeds and nourishes the soul. Through faith in Christ, the jar of His mercy continually spills out and the jug of grace daily flows in His peace and power. Consider sharing that food with someone today.
Prayer: Dear Father, reveal to me those who need to hear of the true Bread of Life, Your Son, Jesus Christ and give me the courage to share it. Amen.
