When caring for small children, a mother needs a thousand eyes. From hiding under clothing racks in stores to pouring water all over bathroom floors, little tots discover mischief in numbers beyond description. Yet moments of gratitude are pondered when danger is averted during their curious antics. That is when we believe Jesus lovingly goes before them and has their back covered.
Viewing our own struggles with motherhood, we cannot help but wonder if this was true when Jesus walked the painful, excruciating path toward the cross. Unable to comprehend how a father could permit something so horrible to happen, our finite minds cannot grasp the enormity of it all. Yet Scripture reveals that with each step Jesus trudged toward Calvary, the Father’s love wrapped it all in His eternal thoughts. Even when the Father forsook His Son (Matthew 27:46), His love was evident. There was no other way for our salvation. In that love, the Father marched before His beloved Son and had His back covered, for not one stripe was left on Jesus apart from the Father’s plan to heal and restore us as His children. And for the joy set before Him, Jesus endured it all (Hebrews 12:2) for greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13)
Dear Father, as You were the guide, protector, and rear guard for Your own Son, help me to trust that You are also doing the same for me and my children. Amen.
