As Jesus hung on the cross, both friend and foe were aware that He didn’t deserve it. Even Pilate and his wife knew this man was totally innocent of all charges and not deserving of the accusations or the outcome. So if Jesus didn’t deserve the punishment, who did?
We would rightly shout “We did!” Yet God has taken that punishment away because of this one very powerful truth: God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). Through His death and resurrection, His righteousness is the garment that covers us in Baptism. Out of love, our sins became His. His righteousness became ours.
Yes, Jesus, the One who deserved all things good, didn’t deserve the punishment. But through it, God’s forgiveness was made complete. All glory is now His. The Shepherd is the Lamb. The Creator is the Savior. And, He, the King, now sits at the right hand of God to give us His own reward! How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! (1 John 3:1)
Prayer: Dear Father, open my eyes to the love You and Your Son displayed when He gave His all for me. What joy is mine because of it! Amen.
