I recently decided to learn how to ride a horse. This decision brought both surprising challenges and eye-opening disciplines. First I didn’t realize how difficult it would be to mount and dismount at my age. I also had to learn to sit up tall and straight in the saddle to maintain better balance. But the most important discipline was to take my focus and my concerns off the horse’s reactions to my commands but rather fix my eyes on the scenery that lay ahead.
The more I rode, the more I realized that this practice was a beautiful picture of my walk with Christ. I needed to fix my eyes on Him, rather than on the objects and concerns that created fear and apprehension directly before me. I realized that journeying through this life on earth becomes more beautiful and precious when viewing the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ. Looking to Him through the study of His Word, I can become more acquainted with the kingdom of God and learn to embrace the love of a precious Savior who gave His very life for me. And looking straight ahead, I am better able to see a love that continues to daily guide and sustain me.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank You for giving me the ability to focus my eyes on You and to view Your beauty every day through the study of Your Word. Amen.
