1 Corinthians 15:58
The pastor moved from the chancel area to the congregation. There he picked up his one-year-old granddaughter and place her on a higher platform. With all eyes glued on them, he then proceeded to ask her to walk. As if frozen in place, she firmly stood in that one spot, looking straight ahead out of fear.
Recalling the words of Martin Luther, we are thankful that his willingness to take a stand was not related to fear. His words, “Here I stand” resonate as words of commitment and his resounding faith in the power of the cross. Believing in grace alone, faith alone, Scripture alone, and all because of Christ alone, Luther firmly stood in place. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, his passion would only allow him to give himself fully to the work of the Lord, despite the consequences.
Standing firmly for our faith today is challenging. Many Christians around the world are restricted and even punished for their faith, yet hold fast even to the point of death. May we, along with them, forever be willing to profess our faith and boldly say, “Here I stand.”
Prayer: Jesus, as You surrendered all – even Your life – for me, I ask that Your Spirit grant me the strength to surrender all for You. Amen.
