You would be fed with the finest of wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.
Psalm 81:16
“How sweet it is!” This is an expression often used when we are thrilled that something extraordinary happened and proves that our plans have been well laid out. But it can also be used sarcastically when there is a glitch in our plans. It is then that we ask, “Is life really as sweet as we think it should be?” It feels like we are trying to force honey out of a rock – which, as we know, is seemingly impossible!
Yet impossibilities happen. Because bees often built their hives in the clefts in the rocks in Canaan, the children of Israel understood the words, “You would be fed with the finest of wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you” (Psalm 81:16). It was a picture of God’s daily abundance in a land promised to them.
Today that sweetness for us is revealed through the person of Jesus. As our Rock, Jesus brought the sweetness of salvation to us through faith in His life, death, and resurrection for us. (1 Corinthians 10:4). The honey, the sweetness of His grace and mercy, spills over to us through our Baptism and is freely abundant every day.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, You are not only the Rock on which I stand but the Rock from which all goodness flows. Open my eyes to see the sweetness that lies only in You. Amen.
