Very little brings us as much joy and laughter as that of hearing a baby giggle. We want to stop everything and join in their laughter. Perhaps that is why many of us prefer being with infants and small children rather than with our own peers. Their light-hearted fun spirits bring us the occasional happiness we yearn for. There are times when we may even wonder why we have lost the ability to giggle with glee like a baby.
If we were asked what we think creates happiness, we would have to admit that it is usually measured by our circumstances. There is a difference between happiness and joy. Happiness usually depends on our hoped-for aspirations or a special event. When it passes, so do our feelings of happiness. Joy, however, comes through the study of His Word in spite of the circumstances. It is a gift received from God Himself because of His goodness, forgiveness, and steadfast love. Some of the most joyful people we encounter in life are Christians enduring difficult times. It is their joy that spills forth from Christ that lifts our spirits as well.
Prayer: Dear Lord, clothed in Your righteousness alone, overwhelm me with a joy that can only come from You. Amen.
