Widowed with four small children, my days we were filled with constant chores, school activities, and teaching. Even weekends were taken up with the necessities of family life. My energy waned and I nearly collapsed under the load. My faith, too, was tested to the limit and I wondered if God was ever going to remove some of the pressure. In time, I realized that God had not left me alone. Rather He was holding me closely in His loving arms.
When life’s expectations keep us running beyond our physical and emotional limitations, it is often difficult to move forward one day, one hour, and sometimes one minute at a time. It becomes difficult to focus on the Lord and when we do, we feel challenged to embrace it. Yet God provides these times of testing to reveal and fulfill a great need – that of resting confidently in Him. Coming to Jesus in His Word and Sacraments, we find the emotional and spiritual rest required to sustain the burdens and busy schedules.
“Come unto me, ye weary, And I will give you rest.”
O blessed voice of Jesus, Which comes to hearts oppressed!
It tells of benediction, Of pardon, grace, and peace,
Of joy that hath no ending, Of love that cannot cease.
