In Orlando, Florida, a pastor stood before his congregation. To stress the importance of living for Christ each day, he said, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” At that very moment, he collapsed and died.
What a stark reminder that eternity is only a breath away! As a portrait of the brevity of our lives, each new day can serve to remind us how important it is to embrace the precious gift of our time here on earth. When beautifully understood and enjoyed, our focus becomes more about what Christ has done for us and our subsequent lives in His mission and ministry and less about stressing over the wants and trivialities of this life.
Christ Jesus lived His life for others. His purpose was to care for, to love, and to redeem others. His focus was to do the Father’s will. And as His life now lives in us through baptism, we see His desires become our desires. His love for others becomes our love. The Father’s will becomes our focus as well. In and through Christ, we can daily say, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”
Prayer: Dear Jesus, as I remind myself that my journey here on earth is brief, may I also trust that You will be made complete in me – one day, one year at a time. Amen.
