“Joy to the World, the Lord is Come” is a beautiful and very popular Christmas hymn. It creates a reminder of what heaven coming down to earth looks like. There is a sense of what our lives should feel like, and we hope that the portrait of our future remains secure in Him.
Yet to the hurting world, these words may be bitter sweet as cancer looms on the horizon. Loved ones die and there is no joy to be seen – or felt. Jobs are lost, families separate, and hearts break from loneliness. Some may even ask, “If the Lord has truly come, where is that joy?”
Although hard to understand, true joy is found only in Christ. He grants it to us whether we are sitting on top of the world or submerged in a pit of despair. No created thing can bring about this joy for it is His to provide. And He proved that the most beautiful example of joy in sorrow was Himself. He revealed it as He hung on the cross, serving as our sin-bearer and the author of our salvation. Anticipating the joy to be revealed, He now gives that incredible gift to us (Hebrews 12:2). In Him, there is true joy and it is complete.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank You for revealing that true joy comes from within and can be found only in You. Amen.
